REVIEW

AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

In An Enemy of the People (1882), Henrik Ibsen imagines a small spa whose economy depends on tourism. When Tomás Stockmann discovers that his waters are contaminated, revealing the truth means threatening the livelihood of his own community. More than a century later, the work takes on an indisputable validity: the truth is no longer only hidden, but it circulates, cuts, manipulates and exploits between authorities, the press and neighbors determined to protect their interests. Today, that ethical conflict moves to the era of screens, audios, algorithms and bots that simulate humanity, where the majority are manufactured within hours and enemies are forgotten before nightfall. In a scenario where power and the media constantly speak on behalf of the people, an inescapable question emerges: is it enough to be right when information flows faster than consciousness? This new stage version offers a contemporary look at Ibsen's universal classic. With a dramaturgical adaptation by Juan Pablo Troncoso, directed by Alexandra Von Hummel, comprehensive design by Catalina Devia and performances by Rodrigo Soto, Paulina García, María Gracia Omegna, Germán Pinilla, Sofía Guiraldes and Laura Vila, the production exposes the high cost of upholding an uncomfortable truth in the face of power that will turn its protagonist into an “enemy of the people”.
