There is a timeless magic in the art of minstrel: that ancient tradition where words, music and the body come together to tell stories with voice in their necks, to break up power and connect with the people. With more than 25 years of experience on stage and traveling through squares, schools and theaters across the country and Ibero-America, Tryo Teatro Banda has established an unmistakable seal in Chilean performing arts: contemporary juglarry at the service of rescuing our historical memory and mixed race identity. His arrival in November on the main stage of the Chilean National Theater (TNCH) represents not only a celebration of his quarter of a century of artistic life, but also the consolidation of an indispensable stage language. For those who have already witnessed their work, seeing these works again is an ideal opportunity to “repeat the dish” and revel in their virtuosity; for those who don't know them, it is the gateway to one of the most coherent, stimulating and intelligent theatrical projects on our scene. Pedro de Valdivia (November 4th to 7th)

Awarded the Chilean Film Critics Circle Award and the APES Award in 2009, this piece is the cornerstone where Tryo Teatro Banda's style reaches its maximum expression. Directed by Sebastián Vila and with dramaturgy by Francisco Sánchez, the play reconstructs the first years of the Spanish conquest (1541-1553), taking as its common thread the very letters that Pedro de Valdivia sent to King Carlos V.

Three performer-musicians on stage deployed with prodigious physical energy play more than 20 live instruments. The work contrasts the conqueror's military prowess and appetite for glory with the dignity, intelligence and unwavering resilience of the Mapuche people. What could be dense or distant in a textbook explodes here in satire, musical dynamism and a perfect synchrony between comedy and political reflection. A theatrical and musical clockwork mechanism that demonstrates how minstrel comedy can approach historical tragedy without diminishing rigor or depth.
