“Gloria in Excelsis” offers a scenic look at traditional choral music, addressing a repertoire that is presented on countless occasions and that is very recognizable to the general audience, but which scarcely works with in-depth analysis and critical reflection on its content. The _Concepción Choir (Former USS Choir) has been characterized over the years by its interpretive capacity and the profound sense with which it approaches choral pieces, this element being recognized by the public. It is for this reason that we consider it a powerful opportunity to select this piece from the year 1700 by the renowned composer Antonio Vivaldi, to look at it with the eyes of the 21st century, without changing its musical structure but rather through a staging and critical understanding of the text, which allows us to talk with contemporary stories. Traditional choral music is usually performed in a static manner. This being the reality present in Concepción's choirs, who usually sing in front of the director, each chorister with their score in hand. We believe that this format can and has the potential to be re-thought. Choristers can sing from memory, which immediately removes a visual barrier (“the folders”) with the director and the audience. On the other hand, different movements and locations would be allowed by virtue of the interpretive scenic requirement, which emerged from the conceptual analysis of each of the pieces. The “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” is a powerful declaration of recognition of the majesty of the divine, faced with the image of the smallness of humanity. Man is amazed to see “the heavens” as a mirror of the Creator, and from this amazement comes the cry for protection, the search for reconciliation and a subsequent declaration of trust. Therefore, “crying becomes joy”, moving musically through these emotional states that are easily recognizable by the listener, even if he does not know the meaning of the original text (in Latin)
